An election is a decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold formal office. This is the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy fills offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations.

The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot.

Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results).

Should the democratic party redo the primary elections in Florida and Michigan?
Q. I think it would be completely unfair to leave these two states out, or to not even have Obama on Michigan's ballot. What would be better than elections on the Fourth of July. What do you guys think?

A. I don't understand the disenfranchised argument. So your party officials know a rule, willfully break it, and you're disenfranchised by who? Why is that the DNC's fault? Sounds more like there was INTENT there by Florida and Michigan DEM reps to willfully reject (or maybe even denounce - wink) the rules at the national level. If it were my State, I'd suck it up and have a discussion with my local reps from the democratic party, asking "what were you thinking!"

Do you have the perception that Republicans have fixed past elections and might fix election 08?
Q. The past elections we are talking about are 2000, 2004 - both with controversies that all ended favoring Republicans.

A. It's not a perception that they have, it's a fact. Don't know about the future yet though.
