A political campaign is an organized effort which seeks to influence the decision making process within a specific group. In democracies, political campaigns often refer to electoral campaigns, wherein representatives are chosen or referendums are decided. Political campaigns also include organized efforts to alter policy within any institution or organization.

Politics is as old as humankind and is not limited to democratic or governmental institutions. Some examples of political campaigns are: the effort to execute or banish Socrates from Athens in the 5th century BC, the uprising of petty nobility against John of England in the 13th century, or the 2005 push to remove Michael Eisner from the helm of The Walt Disney Company.

How do I get a job in a political campaign?
Q. I'm an experienced business manager with a long-time, strong interest in politics, and I've known many people in political and policy positions. However, when it comes to figuring out how to get a JOB in a campaign, I'm nobody's insider or best pal from grade school - I'm just a very politically motivated guy who wants to be involved in a substantial way. please don'T recommend volunteering - been there, done that. Stuffing envelopes and making calls are, as they say, the mother's milk of campaigns, I know - but I've done all that in campaigns past. Now, I'm looking for a real involvement, at a career level. Non-cynical, constructive help is appreciated.

A. Get trained. Democratic GAIN, Democracy for America, 21st Century Dems, EMILY's List, etc. Something credible. Start with a local or state rep. campaign. Local campaigns don't usually have paid staff, but being their campaign director and winning should set you up for something paid. Also, make sure you have enough saved up to live on and have a handle on your health care situation. If you make even $2000/month I'd be shocked and only federal campaigns tend to have health insurance. And don't knock the volunteer thing - it worked for me.

Does working at a political campaign job for a summer affect your advancement opportunities?
Q. Let's take for example, if you work at a job like the ones at jobsthatmatter.org. Basically, political action jobs that send people out to lobby for more environmental protection. If you worked there for a summer, do you think it would affect how you are chosen for a position later in life, like if you would be turned down for advancement to a CEO position? My friend says yes, but I disagree. Any more thoughts? (oh yeah, and I was just guessing the category under which this falls under)

A. You ask a good question. I am doing a summer internship for a grassroots organization encouraging people to vote, so it isn t really a specific political campaign for one side or the other. I honestly think working for a political campaign would be great for your resume. Generally, employers can t really discriminate against you for political reasons. One way that I ve found a way to remain neutral when working for political campaigns is to participate in the activities as a photographer. There s some information on how to make money by taking pictures here: You can apply most of the info there to your interest. Newspapers and candidates websites are always interested in receiving up-to-date pictures from political campaign… [cont.]
