Q. We have recently purchased a 1999 old-style Jetta diesel with an odometer reading of about 95,000km but the car drives like it has 200,000. Is there any way to tell if the previous owner turned back the odometer?... The maintenence history, all dealer services, matches up with the mileage. in response to the answers ... it is a TDI, they don't make non turbo diesels in that year. It is possible to turn back the odometer, I just don't know how but I know it's computer related, the past owner is a computer prof. The car had to get a seat replaced and I know it feels like 200,000km because of suspension and handling... US DOT required car manufacturers to install tamper proof odometers because fraud was so prevalent in the 60's and 70's. If the odometer has been turned back, a seal was broken and the odometer will not work. The maintenance records match up, so I would save the expense of a carfax report and get your ride tuned up.
