An election is a decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold formal office. This is the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy fills offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). This article is part of the Politics series Elections

Answered by avkedav - Thu Jan 10 23:17:52 2008 How can I find out about upcoming elections, national and in Nebraska? Q. I just turned 18, and recently registered to vote in Nebraska, so I want to know when the next elections (on the national, state, and local level) are so I can participate. Asked by linkgurlie06 - Tue Jan 17 00:50:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. In federal elections, the next election is the primary for mid-term elections, in which all representatives in the House are up for election as well as 1/3 of the Senators, including Ben Nelson from Nebraska. There are also several state positions that have primaries then, including governor, attorney general, and state legislators. There is likely also local ballot measures, but without knowing what city you live in I couldn't give you more info on that. Watch out for an information pamphlet in the mail that will give much more information when the election is closer. Answered by James - Tue Jan 17 02:15:18 2006 Why do we have elections in November?
Q. I was just wondering cause I was reading up on the election of 1860 (Lincoln) and obviously, it is an age old tradition. Is there any specific reason (political, social, etc.) we started and still start elections in November? Asked by Moonlight Punch Romance.. - Thu Feb 21 23:33:44 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. "When the United States was first founded, Congress met in December and usually adjourned in March. This was largely because it was the only time farmers could be away from the land. A 1792 law established that presidential elections should be held sometime in November, which gave enough time to count the votes before the new congressional session started.
