An election is a decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold formal office. This is the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy fills offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). This article is part of the Politics series Elections

GNU Free Documentation License Why is it, before elections Bush was be blamed for not getting Osama, now the libs say Osama is not important? Q. That is all you heard during the elections is that Obama kept saying that Bush failed to get Obama while focusing on a war of choice (Iraq). Now, the liberals say that Osama is dead and that he is not important anymore. Again liberals are true to their own double standard failures. Answered by GoGo Girls - Sat Jun 6 19:13:58 2009 What is the point of delegates in the elections? Q. Why do we rely on delegates and the electoral college in presidential elections? Why do we not just simply count the public vote and the one with the most votes wins? Asked by par8hds unite - Tue May 27 22:16:05 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Delegates are made up by the politicall parties and is based on how the electoral college functions. The Primaries are not required by the constitution, the Electoral College is. The primary reason for the EC was to ensure that the rural areas and smaller states weren't being ignored or overlooked in favor of candidates from the larger states. If the Presidency was based on the popular vote, Candidates would only go to high populated states such as California, NY, Illinois and Texas etc. New Hampshire, Idaho etc would never be respresented. Answered by TLE_MGR - Tue May 27 22:56:00 2008 Could the Iranian elections be as bogus than the US 2000 election?
Q. Remember the supreme court case Bush v. Gare in which the justices decided NOT to count all the votes, ushering a warmongering, torturing dictator? Could the Iranian elections be THAT fraudulent? Asked by mikky - Sun Jun 14 04:40:46 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't forget Bush's brother, and their dad's friends who aided and abetted him in cheating his way into office! I think the other answers here might be missing your point. The world would expect cheating from a crazy Iranian (Muslim, Third World, etc etc) but most of us would think an American election would be fair and honest. Well, we would have until 2000, as you so rightly say. And if Dubya had been allowed a third term, he would probably have cheated again. Never mind Iran, Dubya makes Mugabe look honest!
