A term limit is a legal restriction that limits the number of terms a person may serve in a particular elected office. Term limits are found usually in presidential and semi-presidential systems as a method to curb the potential for dictatorships, where a leader effectively becomes "president for life". There are different types of term limits. Sometimes, there is an absolute limit on the number of terms a person can serve, while, in other cases, the restrictions are merely on the number of consecutive terms a person can serve.

Should there be term limits for United States Presidents?
Q. There may be really good presidents like Lincoln, Reagan, Kennedy, or Jackson that did their country good. Would it be good for presidents like them to stay in office longer? And if there are bad presidents, can't the people just not reelect them? So are term limits important to our democratic-republican country or not?
Asked by Do-Ba You-Ba Think-Ba That-Ba? - Sun Feb 1 14:42:55 2009 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are term limits, and they are important. They were developed after Jackson and Lincoln were in office, so both men could have had longer terms if they want to. As you know, Lincoln died. The presidents that are good shouldn't have more terms because we, as a habit, will become used to the same man as president and that man will eventually have to step down. And those who are president for more than two terms may become hotheaded and egotistical, taking on more control than presidents are rightfully given. You cannot suggest that those were the best presidents, because there were both positives and negatives to those men, as well as all other men in office. We are not just a democratic-republican country. We have other parties,… [cont.]

Would putting term limits on members of congress really be a good thing, or do long terms get better results?
Q. If a member of congress needs time to become good at their job because of the contacts that need to be established, would term limits be a good thing? How do we get congress members to truly do our bidding?

A. There is some argument that if members of Congress were repeatedly turned out of office, the unelected bureaucracy would actually seize more and more control of the government. That's a valid point, but I do believe in term limits...I'd say 4 terms maximum for a Congressmen, the same limit in years that the President is limited to. Our Congressmen are supposed to be smart, and they should be able to learn how to work "the system" within a year. If they can't...well, they're too dumb to be re-elected then. They should also have every expectation of having to go back and live in the real world that they've legislated into existence, and to be young enough that they actually have to go back out there and make a living in it. Being the… [cont.]

Why do the people refuse to demand term limits of all politicians, currently there are people in the house?
Q. and senate who have to wear depends so they do not soil themselves and are not capable of making a vote or decision without a staff member assisting, why is the electorate so DUMB that they have people in their 90s smelling up the halls of congress with fecal matter when they could demand term limits or at the very least mandatory retirement? demand term limits and vote everyone out who is currently in office.

A. I can not agree with you any more, the problem is that you will never convince congress to impose an end to their job and it is unlikely that they would ever place an initiative on the ballot to change to constitution that would include term limits. Our only method of demanding term limits is to vote out every member of the house every 2 to 4 years or what ever we the people decide is a term that is long enough. The senate sits for a 6 year term, is that long enough or should they get 12 years? Congress already has the American public screwed, not only do we need term limits, even if by the voters, we need to repeal the plush retirement package these idiots get. Currently if you serve one term in congress, your retirement package is 100% [cont.]
